First snow in the Alps: where fresh snow fell this past week

Updated 23 oktober 2026 · Nivosola

It is late October and the Alps are turning white. Our daily snow data (source: Open-Meteo, reference date 23 October 2026) shows fresh snow over the past seven days in 55 of the 127 ski areas we track. A good moment to plan your ski holiday: the choice is still wide and prices are often lower now than in December.

Where did the most snow fall?

The leaders of the past seven days, according to our per-area measurements:

On every area page you will also find the current snow depth, the snow forecast and webcams, so you can see for yourself how white it already is.

What does early snow say about the season?

To be honest: October snow is mostly a mood-setter. On glaciers and above 2,500 metres this snow often stays; lower down, part of it melts again during a warm November week. What early snowfall does do is cool the ground, which helps the pistes build up faster once the season snow arrives.

If you want certainty in December, look at the altitude of the area first. High-altitude areas such as Tignes - Val d'Isère and the Arlberg region are classically snow-sure; on our area pages you will find a snow-reliability score per area based on altitude and historical snow depth.

Book now or wait?

For the Christmas holidays and February, the best offers in popular villages disappear first. Outside school holidays you can afford to wait and benefit from current deals. Compare per area on our ski page, with prices refreshed daily from hundreds of accommodations.

Frequently asked questions

When do most ski areas in the Alps open?

Glacier areas often run as early as October or November. Most regular ski areas open between late November and mid-December, depending on snowfall and the altitude of the area.

Does early snow in October mean a good ski season?

Not necessarily. Early snowfall is a nice signal, but it says little about December and January. If you want certainty, choose an area with pistes above 2,000 metres.

How up to date are Nivosola's snow figures?

We refresh our snow data every morning via Open-Meteo, per ski area. On every area page you can see the current snow depth and the fresh snow of the past seven days.
