Ski school: lessons, prices and tips
What ski lessons cost, private versus group, from what age children can ski, and the best ski areas for beginners.
What does ski school cost?
Prices vary by resort and country, but as a guide: group lessons usually cost €150–230 for a 5–6 day course (a few hours each morning), while private lessons run about €60–90 per hour. Austria is often the best value; France (ESF) and Switzerland tend to be pricier. Book online in advance — walk-up prices are higher and popular weeks sell out.
Group lessons vs private lessons
Group lessons are cheaper, social and ideal for children and beginners who learn well alongside others. Private lessons cost more but progress is fastest: the instructor adapts to you, you choose the timing, and a family or small group can share one instructor. Many people combine both — a group course plus one private lesson to fix specific points.
Ski school for children
Most ski schools take children from around 3–4 years in dedicated kids' clubs, with play areas, magic-carpet lifts and lunch supervision. From about 4–5 they join real lessons. Look for resorts with a gentle, well-equipped beginner zone close to the village — these make the first week far less stressful for families.
The best ski areas for beginners
Beginners are best served by resorts with plenty of blue (easy) runs, gentle nursery slopes and good ski schools. Ski Amadé, Paradiski and Les Trois Vallées all have excellent beginner terrain. See our guide below and pick an area to view its pistes, lifts and accommodations.
Practical tips
Book your ski school and lift pass before you travel, arrive a day early so the first lesson isn't rushed, rent skis suited to your level, and be honest about your level when booking so you're placed in the right group. Combine your lessons with accommodation close to the beginner lifts to save time and energy.
