Best time to ski in Wildschönau

Christmas and New Year (24 December to 6 January) bring the highest demand. Accommodation rates can be 30-40% above the February average, and the main Auffach and Niederau lifts open at 8:30 am with queues already forming.

The sweet spot for value is the first two weeks of March. Resorts across the Tyrol begin shoulder pricing, yet Wildschönau's upper Schatzberg sector (1,900 m) still carries reliable natural snow. A self-catering apartment in Auffach that costs €90 per person per night in February can drop to €65 in the first week of March.

How do you get to Wildschönau and which airport is best?

Wildschönau lies in the Inn Valley south of Wörgl, making it straightforward to reach from two international airports.

Innsbruck (INN): About 55 km away. Direct flights operate from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Edinburgh. Flight time is approximately 2 hours. A shuttle transfer from Innsbruck airport to Wildschönau takes around 1 hour and costs roughly €35-50 per person with shared services.

Munich (MUC): About 130 km away. More frequent flights from UK and Irish airports, with journey times of 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes. Road transfer to Wildschönau takes 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. Shared shuttle prices start at around €45 per person.

Driving is practical if you are travelling from Germany or crossing from Switzerland. The A12 Inntalautobahn runs directly past the Wörgl-Ost exit, from which Wildschönau is 12 km by mountain road. Winter tyres or snow chains are legally required in Austria from 1 November to 15 April when conditions demand it.

Rail is also viable: Wörgl station is on the main Innsbruck-Salzburg line with regular services, and a local bus connects to Niederau and Auffach.
